Creative Newborn Photoshoot Ideas With Photo Planning Tips

Hi friends!

Are you trying to conceive, pregnant, expecting, adopting, have a surrogate, or just had your sweet newborn baby? I have good news for you! Newborn photos can be planned at ANY stage of your baby journey - what’s most important is celebrating your family growing and your new little bundle of joy (or bundles if we’re talking twins or triplets!)

I’m answering some of the top questions around newborn photos and dishing all the photo planning tips - and I’m sharing some creative newborn photoshoot examples and ideas as a bonus at the end!

Newborn photos are pretty popular in the pregnancy and newborn world - but you may be wondering..

Why are newborn pictures such a big deal?

Having a newborn photoshoot is a unique opportunity for you to document a memorable time in your family’s life, but also this specific stage of newness with your sweet baby and family.

Do I need newborn photos taken?

You definitely don’t have to - but the first few days, weeks, and months with a newborn pass REALLY quickly. They will FLY by and you want to document and savor every moment you can. Infants develop, grow, and change much quicker than any other stage, and they will hit some special milestones too (and continue to as they head into their first year of life).

One of the biggest regrets with families is that they didn’t get these moments captured and they look back on it and wish they did. We can’t get those moments back - so I highly recommend getting newborn portraits taken!

What can I use newborn photos for?

Newborn portraits can be used for:

  • Birth announcements

  • Nursery decor

  • Thank You Cards (for hospital staff, doctors, family, friends, and for baby gifts, or friends that brought you meals after baby arrives)

  • Home Decor

  • Holiday Gifts/Christmas Gifts (think ornaments, key chains, coasters, mouse pad, etc)

  • Baby book momentos to mark their birth and the stages they grow through

When should I schedule newborn photos?

I recommend reaching out to me and booking a newborn session during your third trimester. We usually will schedule to have the session 1 week after the due date, which is the ideal time to take advantage of baby’s sleepiness, flexibility and tinyness.

That said, we can do newborn sessions at any stage from 1 day old to 1 month old.

If you’re late in the game and just thought of booking a newborn session after birth, don’t worry, I will try my best to fit you in my schedule or help you find a photographer who might be able to.

*Pro tip - some photographers offer payment plans which can help you can break down the investment of your session into small manageable payments each month until your session.

I always offer different types of payment plans - if you’re in the San Francisco Bay Area and want to chat about payment plans for your newborn photoshoot - let’s chat! Don’t let the cost of a photoshoot hold you back - your newborn will appreciate having these photos to look back at one day, and trust me.. So will you!

BONUS: Creative Posed Newborn Photoshoot Ideas

Here’s a quick behind the scenes look at newborn sessions in San Francisco Bay Area. And I’m actually sharing real examples from my photo studio in Sausalito!

Newborn session in Studio is my most popular session and it is also my favorite type of session because I get to meet your precious little baby, dress them up in cute outfits and create themed portraits with super cute props and poses. I have quite an extensive collection of colorful wraps, cute props, beautiful baskets, and adorable outfits.

Timeframe for Posed Photos?

These types of sessions best take place as soon after birth as you are comfortable, ideally when the baby is younger than 2 weeks old because they will likely sleep through the session and are easier to position and pose. Newborn session at studio will take around 3 hours to give time to get baby comfortable and in deep sleep, change outfits, create multiple sets, and time to change diapers, and feed as necessary.

If siblings are joining the session, I recommend planning this around nap times and feeding times

when the baby is about 1-2 weeks old because they will likely sleep through the session and are easier to position and pose. I recommend planning this around nap times and feeding times - or building in some time/space to reset, change, feed, change a diaper if needed.
