Growing up in Indonesia in a Chinese immigrant family, Lunar New Year was my favorite celebration of the entire year. It felt even more exciting than Christmas to me because it meant visiting all of our extended family, playing with my cousins, eating lots of delicious food, and most importantly: getting plenty of red envelopes filled with money!
The dream is always to celebrate surrounded by our big extended family. But since they’re all in Indonesia, we’re not always able to travel to Asia for Lunar New Year. In the years we stay here, Bradley and I create our own traditions by hosting a celebration at home, celebrating with his classroom or school, or joining local community festivities.
Since I love this time of year so much, I thought I would share some of the events we are most excited for in 2026. And if you are also looking to document a Lunar New Year celebration/ milestone, I have something special for you too.

San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade
March 7, 2026 at 5:15PM
If you have never experienced the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade, it is truly unforgettable. It is one of the largest Lunar New Year parades outside of Asia, and the energy is incredible. The parade begins at 2nd and Market, circles around Union Square, and ends near Kearny Street and Columbus Avenue in Chinatown.
The dragons, the lion dancers, the drums, the martial arts groups, the glowing floats. It is loud, colorful, and so exciting for kids.
If you are celebrating Lunar New Year in San Francisco with little ones, I recommend arriving early to grab a good street spot. Bleacher seats are also available if you prefer a more structured viewing experience.
Chinatown Community Street Fair in San Francisco
March 7 to 8, 2026
The Chinatown Community Street Fair is one of the most exciting daytime Lunar New Year events in San Francisco. With over 120 booths and concessions, it truly feels like a festival. You can explore Chinatown, support local vendors, enjoy Chinese folk dancing, opera, and drumming, and just soak in the festive atmosphere.
One of my favorite things about this event is how interactive it feels. There are performances on Pacific Street below Grant Avenue, and you can even take family photos with the giant puppets and parade artifacts.
It is such a beautiful way to introduce children to culture and tradition in a fun, accessible way.
Thrive City at Chase Center in San Francisco
February 21, 2026
If you want a family-friendly celebration in the city, Thrive City is a great option. Head to the area around Chase Center for an afternoon of activities, cultural dances, and drum performances. It’s an easy “yes” for families who want to celebrate without committing to a full day out.
25th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration at OMCA
February 21, 2026
If you are open to crossing the bridge, the Oakland Museum of California hosts one of the most diverse Lunar New Year celebrations in the Bay Area.
This year marks their 25th anniversary celebration. Families can enjoy performances, storytelling, hands-on activities, and food from local AAPI chefs. There are traditions represented by Korean, Pilipino, Vietnamese, and Chinese communities.
It is educational, vibrant, and incredibly family friendly.
Lunar New Year at Santana Row in San Jose
February 21, 2026
Santana Row puts on a lively celebration with lion dances, taiko drums, singers, martial arts, and festive red envelopes. It’s a great option if you want an afternoon event with lots to see and do.

Oakland Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade
February 28, 2026
The Oakland Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade is another wonderful community-centered event.
It feels slightly smaller and more intimate than the San Francisco parade, but just as heartfelt. Families, cultural groups, and local businesses gather to celebrate heritage and welcome the new year together.
Lunar New Year at Filoli Gardens
If you’ve never been to Filoli, it’s beautiful. Lunar New Year here feels extra special because you get cultural performances in a stunning garden setting. If your family loves an outing that feels peaceful and pretty (and still festive), this is a great pick. Filoli is celebrating the Year of the Horse through February 28.
Lion Dance Performance in Marin
For my Marin families, the Marin Chinese Cultural Association hosts traditional Lion Dance performances in San Anselmo.
It is such a special way to experience Lunar New Year close to home without having to drive into the city.

Celebrate the Year of the Horse with a Lunar New Year Photographer in San Francisco
As much as I love attending Lunar New Year events in San Francisco, one of my favorite ways to celebrate is by documenting families during this season.
There is something so meaningful about seeing children dressed in traditional outfits, standing proudly next to their parents, honoring where they come from.
This year, I am hosting Lunar New Year Tiny Sessions on March 8th at my Sausalito studio.
If you are looking for a Lunar New Year photographer in San Francisco or the Bay Area, these sessions are designed to be joyful, relaxed, and beautiful. The studio will feature a red and gold backdrop with florals and festive details. All you need to do is bring your traditional outfits and your beautiful family.
These are not just seasonal photos. They become heirlooms. They hang on your walls. They remind your children of their roots and their story.
