Mommy and Me Dates: Family Friendly Cafés and Parks in the San Francisco Bay Area

Ever feel like you’re doing the same thing every day and need to get out with your little one(s)? From one mom to another…It’s challenging in the newborn or baby (or even pre-schooler) stages to get out and try something new but I really encourage you to consider once a week switching it up a bit and adding something unique to your week if you can! My favorite way to do this is to try a new park, cafe, or hidden gem in our area with my son.

San Francisco is such a versatile city with a unique mix of fun places to visit, hang out, enjoy a coffee or some really good eats. It’s perfect for family outings, and even a little picnic in the park, or a stroll with your favorite to-go coffee or tea in hand. Whether you’re looking to grab a coffee or enjoy some fresh air with your little one, I’m sharing my favorite kid-friendly and baby-friendly cafes and parks in the San Francisco area that are perfect for a fun and relaxing mommy and me date, or to meet with another mom for a get-together, regardless of how old your little ones are.

1. Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is one of the largest and most well-known parks in San Francisco Bay Area. offering plenty of open spaces for babies and toddlers, and older kids to explore. The park has quite a few playgrounds, gardens, and outdoorsy spots perfect for family photos and leisurely strolls. This is also one of my favorite locations to photograph at because it’s so large and has so many options in one place. But I recommend having a plan for where you want to go before you arrive as it’s a rather big park and it’s quite a walk from one side to the other.

  • Stow Lake: Again, gorgeous views that are hard to go wrong with. You can also take a walk around the lake for a relaxing afternoon. I really love the pond and doc for portraits too!
  • Conservatory of Flowers: Good spot for  family photos, or a few self portraits with your little one with exotic plants and flowers all around you.
  • Koret Children’s Quarter: This playground has a playground with swings, slides, and climbing areas for the older siblings, or if your little one is starting to grow and explore a bit. It even has a carousel!

2. Dolores Park Cafe

The name of this cafe comes from how close it is to Dolores Park. This café has a warm and cozy atmosphere and it’s family and baby friendly. It has spacious seating, and with how close it is to the park it’s an easy transition from lunch and coffee to a stroll through the park, or come here for a post photoshoot snack, or after a park playdate when the little ones are getting hangry.!

  • Has healthy and kid-friendly options, including sandwiches, salads, and smoothies
  • You can sit outside and enjoy the views of Dolores Park

3. The Mill

The Mill makes artisan bread and delicious coffee, which is a duo that’s hard to beat! It’s not too crowded, and has more of a casual aesthetic, so it’s a great place for you to make a quick stop and relax and recharge with your baby or littles ones.

  • They have freshly baked goods, delicious coffee, and kid-friendly treats your kids will love
  • Roomy enough for strollers and high chairs to fit too
  • Alamo Square Park: This is within walking distance and encourages you to get up and move around after you enjoy a bite to eat, and a caffeine pick-me-up!  Alamo Square Park is where you can see the famous Painted Ladies too, get the camera ready!

4. Crissy Field

Crissy Field is a really pretty waterfront park with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. It has a more wide open landscape for kids to run around and is perfect for a family picnic or a casual photoshoot.

  • East Beach: A sandy beach area where your kids can play and you can relax and enjoy the views and capture some candids of them playing
  • It’s the perfect spot for a family or impromptu picnic with your little ones
  • The walking areas are stroller-friendly so you can enjoy the views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz without any extra hurdles

5. Mountain Lake Park

Mountain Lake Park is a serene park that features a playground, a beautiful lake, and plenty of shaded areas. It’s a quieter park in comparison to some of the more crowded parks, making it a perfect spot for families with young children, or new walkers.

  • Fun playground with swings, slides, and a play structure for babies and toddlers
  • Pretty peaceful environment for a stroll or a casual photoshoot with your baby, or just to sit back and nurse and snuggle with your baby
  • Shaded picnic spots (Rare Score!!) where your family can enjoy some snacks or a quick bite together without overheating in the sun

Skip the stress and make memories with these…

Tips for visiting cafes and parks with babies and/or kids:

– For the super little ones, always pack a diaper bag with essentials like diapers, wipes, snacks, and a change of clothes

– Schedule with your baby’s nap schedule in mind to ensure they are likely to enjoy the experience as much as you are

– Pack extra snacks/water for the older kiddos (or yourself, especially if you’re nursing)

– Don’t forget to snap a few selfies and pictures of your little one enjoying the day

Trying out kid and baby-friendly cafes and parks in San Francisco is a great way to create lasting memories with your little one. No matter the age! Whether you’re enjoying a delicious meal, taking a scenic walk, or just playing in the park, these spots offer everything you need for a nice little family adventure.. Or even a playdate for you and another mom and your kids to connect. Motherhood can sometimes feel a bit isolating and we have to challenge ourselves at times to try something new, make a new friend, and/or go somewhere we aren’t familiar with.

I also make an effort to try out new places and small businesses with my son, Bradley. We love finding new little hidden gems and spots to enjoy around the bay area, and supporting other local San Francisco small businesses. Especially coffee shops and parks – because there’s just something nostalgic about a good cup of coffee or tea, and a nice stroll through the park together. It’s also far too easy to get into a routine and go to the same places every time and potentially miss opportunities to discover a new favorite spot or a little hidden gem.

He’s also been my guinea pig with trying out some different parks, trails, lakes, beaches, and lookout points. It’s how I put together my San Francisco Bay Photo Locations Guide, and over the years has created so many timeless family photos that feel just like the bay!
