After living in the Bay area for over 10 years, I feel like I can confidently say this, the San Francisco Bay Area has some of the most beautiful and diverse photo locations for families.
One day you can be by the water with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the next you’re surrounded by tall trees, and then suddenly you’re in a quiet garden or walking along coastal cliffs. There’s so much variety here, which is part of what makes choosing a location both exciting and a little overwhelming.
With my studio based in Sausalito, I spend a lot of time photographing families all across San Francisco and Marin, and over time, I’ve found a handful of locations that I come back to again and again. So if you’ve been wondering where to take your family photos in the Bay Area, here are some of my favorite spots, along with a few tips to help you find the right fit for your family.

Cavallo Point, Iconic Views and Easy Access
Cavallo Point is one of those locations that never disappoints.
You get the Golden Gate Bridge, the water, open grassy space, and that soft coastal light that just makes everything feel a little extra special. It’s one of my go-to recommendations for families who want something that feels very “Bay Area” without needing to hike or move around too much.
Why families love it:
- Easy to access, with plenty of parking
- Great for kids, grandparents, and even pets
- Beautiful at sunset with warm, golden light

Marin Headlands, Open Space and Coastal Drama
If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, Marin Headlands is such a beautiful option.
This location is all about wide open views, rolling hills, and that incredible golden light right before sunset. It feels big and free, and it’s perfect for families who don’t mind a little wind and a bit of walking.
A few things to keep in mind:
- It can be windy, which adds beautiful movement
- Best for sunset sessions
- No wheelchair access, so not for those with mobility issues

San Francisco Botanical Garden, Lush and Green Year Round
Located inside Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Botanical Garden is one of the most versatile locations in the city.
It’s green, peaceful, and full of little paths and open spaces for kids to explore. If you’re looking for something natural but still very easy to navigate, this is a great choice.
Why it works so well:
- Lots of shade, which makes it great any time of day
- Wide paths, stroller and grandparent friendly
- Perfect for younger kids who like to explore

Lovers Lane, A Hidden Forest in the City
Tucked inside the Presidio, Lovers’ Lane feels like a little escape from the city.
With tall eucalyptus trees, soft light, and the iconic Wood Line installation, it has a quiet, slightly moody feel that’s really beautiful in photos.
A few tips:
- Best in the late afternoon for that soft glow
- Expect a short walk to get to the main path
- Great for families who love a cozy, nature-filled setting with tall trees

Legion of Honor, Elegant and Timeless
If you’re drawn to something a little more polished and classic, Legion of Honor is such a beautiful option.
The architecture here gives your photos a timeless, almost European feel, with soft neutral tones and beautiful light throughout the day. As someone who majored in Architectural Design (before I switched to photography), this is my jam. But the best part about this location is that you get the best of both worlds of beautiful urban setting and nature backdrop because the museum is just a few steps away from Lands End trail which is surrounded by greenery and tall trees.
Why families choose this spot:
- Minimal walking and very accessible
- Great for grandparents
- Works well for both candid and more traditional portraits
- Options for urban/ architectural settings and nature settings

Blue Heron Lake, A Storybook Setting in Golden Gate Park
Previously known as Stow Lake, Blue Heron Lake feels a little like stepping into a storybook.
There are charming bridges, tree-lined paths, and water views that make the whole session feel soft and whimsical.
A few highlights:
- Great for kids who like to explore
- A mix of paved and natural paths
- Beautiful warm tones in the fall
San Rafael Trails, Simple, Quiet, and Relaxed
For something a little more low-key, I love the trails in San Rafael.
These spots are peaceful and easy, which makes them perfect for families with younger kids or anyone who wants a slower, more relaxed session.
Why this location works:
- Quiet and less crowded
- Easy walking paths
- Beautiful golden light in the evening
Why the Bay Area Is So Special for Family Photos
What I love most about photographing families in San Francisco and Marin is how much variety we have.
You can choose something iconic, something quiet, something adventurous, or something simple. And no matter where we go, the focus is always the same, your family, your connection, and the little moments in between.
It’s never really about the location alone. It’s about how your family experiences it together.
That’s where the magic is, the laughter, the movement, the in-between moments that you’ll want to remember years from now .
Choosing the Right Location for Your Family
If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a simple way to think about it:
- Iconic Bay Area views: Cavallo Point or Marin Headlands
- Green and nature-filled: Botanical Garden or Lovers Lane
- Classic and elegant: Legion of Honor
- Playful and storybook: Blue Heron Lake
- Easy and low-key: San Rafael trails
And if you’re still unsure, I always help guide my families based on your kids, your style, and the kind of experience you want.
