How to Prepare Your Kids for a Family Photo Session (By Age!)

Wondering how to prepare your kids for family photos?

You’re not alone. It’s one of the questions I get asked most often as a Marin family photographer.

Parents worry about everything from toddler meltdowns to cranky babies and teenagers who don’t want to be there. Some good news though! A little preparation goes a long way.

Whether you’re bringing a newborn home, chasing a busy toddler, or convincing your teenager that family photos won’t be awkward, these simple tips will help everyone arrive feeling relaxed and ready for a fun session.

Newborns & Babies

With newborns and young babies, timing is everything.

One of my biggest recommendations is to hold off on a full feeding for about two to three hours before your session (as much as your baby’s schedule allows). Then, give them a nice, full feeding right before we begin. A full tummy almost always helps babies feel sleepy, relaxed, and content.

Another little trick? Give your baby a bath beforehand.

A warm bath can be incredibly calming, and it also helps freshen up their skin before photos. I also recommend bringing your favorite baby lotion if you normally use it so their skin stays soft and hydrated throughout the session.

And remember, babies are babies. If they need extra cuddles, another feeding, or a few breaks, we’ll simply follow their lead. There is never any rush. Plus, I am always prepared to snuggle a baby so you can take a breather.

Toddlers & Young Kids (Ages 1–5)

This age is so much fun… and wonderfully unpredictable.

I schedule sessions during the time of day when your child is usually happiest. Happy kids make for much happier photo sessions.

Before arriving, make sure everyone has eaten a good meal. A full belly goes a long way toward preventing meltdowns.

I also encourage families to bring a few comfort items, including:

  • Water
  • Easy, non-messy snacks (some snacks can also be used as a bribe: smarties and gummies)
  • A favorite stuffed animal
  • A favorite toy or book

Sometimes we won’t even need them, but it’s always nice to have them nearby just in case.

One of my favorite tips is to start talking about the photo session a few days ahead of time. Instead of saying, “We have to take family pictures,” try something like: “We’re going to meet Anna! She has a big camera with a little animal helper, and we’re going to play together while she takes pictures.”

When kids know what to expect, they often arrive feeling excited instead of nervous.

Preteens & Teens

If you have older kids, involving them in the planning process can make a huge difference.

Show them my work ahead of time so they know what to expect. Let them know this isn’t about standing stiffly and smiling at the camera, it’s about documenting your family as you are.

I also love finding ways to make part of the session about them.

Maybe they’re really into fashion. Maybe they’re obsessed with sneakers, soccer, music, surfing, or dance. Whatever makes them light up, let’s incorporate a little bit of that into the session. When you fill out your questionnaire before your session, tell me about your kids. What are they interested in? What are they passionate about? What makes them laugh?

The more I know about them beforehand, the easier it is for me to connect with them and create images that truly feel like them.

Ready to Plan Your Family Session?

Preparing your kids for family photos doesn’t have to feel stressful. And you definitely don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

One of my favorite parts of the experience is getting to know your family before we ever meet. During our planning process, I’ll learn about your children’s personalities, routines, interests, and anything else that helps me create a session that feels natural for your family. Whether your little one needs extra snack breaks, your toddler is obsessed with dinosaurs, or your teenager would rather be anywhere else, we’ll make a plan together.

My goal isn’t perfect behavior. My goal is to create an experience where everyone feels comfortable enough to simply be themselves. That’s where the magic happens.

Frequently Asked Questions About Preparing Kids for Family Photos

How-to-Prepare-Your-Kids-for-a-Family-Photo-Session-Mini-Anna-Photography4

Should I tell my kids we’re taking family photos?

Yes! I actually recommend talking about it a few days before your session. Keep it positive and exciting. Instead of saying, “We have to take family pictures,” try saying, “We’re going to meet Anna! She has a camera with a little animal helper, and we’re going to play together while she takes pictures.”

What should my child eat before our family photo session?

A full meal before your session is one of the best things you can do. Hungry kids, and adults, rarely enjoy having their photos taken.

Should I bring snacks?

Absolutely! Pack easy, non-messy snacks along with water. Think crackers, puffs, fruit snacks, or anything your child loves that won’t stain clothes. You may not need them, but you’ll be happy they’re there if you do.

Can we bring a favorite stuffed animal or toy?

Please do! Comfort items can help little ones feel more relaxed. Sometimes they even become part of the photos, and years from now you’ll love looking back and remembering the things they couldn’t leave home without.

What if my toddler has a meltdown during our family photo session?

Take a deep breath. We’ve all been there. Meltdowns happen, and they definitely don’t mean your session is ruined. I leave room for breaks, cuddles, snacks, and a change of pace whenever we need one. Some of my favorite images happen after everyone has had a chance to reset.

My child is shy around new people. Is that okay?

Of course! I never expect kids to warm up to me right away. We’ll take our time, play a few games, and let them get comfortable at their own pace. There is never any pressure.

My teenager doesn’t want family photos. Help!

I get it! One of the best ways to get teens excited is to involve them before the session. Show them my work, let them know what to expect, and tell me about their hobbies or interests ahead of time. I love finding little ways to incorporate their personality into our time together.

What if my kids won’t smile?

Don’t worry about forcing smiles. My sessions are playful, interactive, and full of movement. Genuine laughter almost always happens naturally when kids are having fun.

When is the best time to schedule family photos with young kids?

I always recommend scheduling your session during the time of day when your child is usually happiest. We try to avoid nap times whenever possible and choose a time when everyone is feeling their best.

What should my kids wear for family photos?

Choose outfits that your kids feel comfortable wearing. If they’re tugging at itchy sweaters or uncomfortable shoes, it will show. Soft, comfortable clothing that coordinates with the rest of the family always photographs beautifully. If you’re feeling stuck, I’ll happily help you plan everyone’s outfits before your session.

Do you help us prepare before the session?

Absolutely! Every family receives personalized guidance before their session. I’ll help you with everything from choosing the perfect location to planning outfits and sharing age-specific tips based on your children’s personalities. My goal is for you to arrive feeling relaxed, prepared, and excited for our time together.
